The Ukraine – a nation at war

The Ukraine lies in Eastern Europe and is, after Russia, the largest nation in Europe. Kiew, the capital, is located in the north; in the south, the Ukraine borders on the Asow and Black Seas. The country organized itself politically as a parliamentary-presidential republic after achieving independence from Rusia in 1991. It relinquished its atomic weapons to Russia and received in return guarantees of territorial integrity in 1994. When the pro-Russian President, Wiktor Janukowytsch, refused to sign a planned association agreement with the European Union at the end of 2013, mass protests broke out.  Russia occupied the peninsula Krim in 2014. Russia began a full-scale war against the Ukraine in February 2022. The number of victims increases daily – millions are fleeing.

The Ukraine is one of the world’s largest exporters of grain and is called the ‛breadbasket of Europe’. The war in the Ukraine has caused a worldwide increase in grain prices and has had devastating effects on the development of global starvation. In view of the severe emergency, the German Doctors are performing emergency aid together with partners.
