Uganda – a country with many problems
Uganda is located in the interior of East Africa on the equator and is surrounded by Kenya, Tanzania, Ruanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Southern Sudan. The border conflict in the north of the country with the Lord’s Resistance Army led by Joseph Kony and the brutal use of child soldiers is well-known worldwide. Hundreds of thousands of people died during the battles. Uganda is the republic with the most refugees in Africa, mostly from the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.
A majority of the people in Uganda live from subsistence farming, the heart of Uganda’s economy. The rural regions in the north and east of the country are often stricken by poverty. Extreme drought and harvest failures are a burden on the communities. Especially women are confronted with a multitude of difficulties. They often have only limited access to education and health care and are exposed to gender-specific violence and oppression. There is also a high number of those infected with HIV and AIDS orphans. The healthcare facilities lack sufficient qualified specialists as well as functioning equipment and infrastructure. We therefore concentrate on training medical specialists and the health of women and children.

„My heart beats for emergency medicine. Recognizing critical situations and dealing with them in a structured manner can make the difference between life and death. The challenge in Uganda is to perform the best possible aid under simple conditions. During my mission, together with my colleagues I was able to train the resuscitation of newborns and adults to more than 200 co-workers and students. What impressed me most was their high motivation to learn and the joy attained by learning new abilities and expanding those already possessed. Training local co-workers sustainably strengthens their autonomy and fits in perfectly with the German Doctors’ motto: Lasting Help.“
